Arrowtown was born out of the 1860s goldrush and was home to nearly 7,000 people during the rush to the lucrative Arrow River. The town has retained its charm and some 2000 residents live there today.
Although only a twenty five minute drive from Queenstown or an easy 25km bike ride Arrowtown is a world away from the hussle and bustle of its neighbour. In spite of its historic ambience the town has an increasinlgly sophisticated image providing high end fashion shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. There are excellent accommodation options.
The Lakes District Museum is certainly worth is a reminder of what life used to be while the Chinese Village provides an insight into the life of the Chinese gold prospectors. Gold pans can be hired in the village and there is still flakes to be found in the Arrow River.
Basing yourself in Arrowtown for your biking holiday is a great option. As well as the Arrowtown to Queenstown section of the Queenstown Great Trail being already ride-able there are a number of rides that start directly in town. The Millenium Walkway is a perfect ride for any beginner or family or a place to get your bike legs back before a bigger journey. Alternatively, the ride into the deserted gold mining settlement of Mactown up the Arrow River is a classic mountain bike ride into stunning Otago scenery accompanied by a real feeling for the greatness of the history of the region.
